Home in the Himalayas

Our Home in the Himalayas (HITH) program aggregates the existing tourism related assets and services such as existing traditional houses, community protected forests, waterfalls, trekking trails, folk songs and dances etc. in the rural Himalayan areas to develop tourism products by combining these assets and services in a creative way. HITH then sells these products in domestic as well as international tourism markets.

The aim of Home in the Himalayas is to make the natural and cultural assets inthe Himalayan areas economically productive and important for locals so that the enterprising people can be mobilized to come forward and organize themselves to take care of these important assets.

By doing the above, Home in the Himalayas (HITH) aims to conserve the ecologically-fragile Garhwal region of India, while offering its guests the highest standards of village hospitality in pristine Himalayan locations.

The Home in the Himalayas program works on the goals of conservation, inclusion and the entrepreneurial participation of marginal rural communities in the booming tourism industry of India.

Home in the Himalayas is a social venture driven by the triple bottom-lines of profit, social impact and environmental conservation. Specifically, its HITH brand aims to:

  • Identify, aggregate and make the existing assets of the rural communities economically productive to generate supplementary income for the marginal farmers
  • Train and provide hand-holding support to the marginal farmer communities in developing understanding and skills for providing rural tourism services.
  • Develop inclusive tourism infrastructure in the villages of Garhwal.
  • Increase incomes and asset-creation of local village communities; and
  • Engage urban, professional Indians to experience understand and partner in the conservation of Garhwal, the ecological Himalayan hot-spot.
