The Government of India is willing to declare the Gangotri region as ‘Eco-sensitive Zone’. This has led to a debate in the region. We recently visited the Gangotri region with a group of students from Indian Institute of Health Research Management (IIHRM) Jaipur. We met the stakeholders to ask their opinion on this issue. Most of the people are concerned that it will hamper development in the region. Very few can imagine that long term sustainable development is dependent on the health of the ecosystem in the region and there are ways to achieve prosperity by conserving the local resources. We believe that there is a huge need of establishing successful models to generate a mountain friendly vision among people.
